Hey everybody!
Finishing the N4 next month and planning to jump straight towards the N2 since we're a bit unsure still what is on the N3, so, I have questions about the WRP flashcards.
I was looking at them on Amazon, and it seems there is a Japanese and English version, and then different levels, and different packs.... Basically, I'd like to buy the pack that covers from N5 to N2, but I am unsure which ones those are. Can anyone advise me on this, so I don't accidentally buy duplicates?
Secondly, the N2 has an extremely large jump in vocab from the N4 obviously, and so far I've been doing paper cards, but the idea of writing 4000 cards make me kind of want to jump out of my skin, lol. Those of you doing N2, do you even study vocab sections, or are you using online flashcards, or do you still bite the bullet and do it the old fashioned way?
Any advice on this I would love to hear, so I can adequately prepare for my Kinokuniya shopping trip this December |

I wrote down the 4000+ vocab words in Mnemosyne. Looking everything up in dictionaries, including the kanji's.
Yes, it took me 2+ months, but hell, I thought it was good practice :P (but in the end it wasn't as I couldn't remember anything :P). |

If you buy volume 2, it is supposed to be for the JLPT N2, volume 1 is more for N5 & N4.

When I did 4級 and 3級, I just did the vocabulary on paper flashcards, however, I am working towards N2 now, just like you, so I have decided that I can't do paper anymore. I've started using Anki, however, I'm sure if you use any program that provides repetative practice of vocabulary will be useful. Obviously, there is no official list of vocabulary, however, I've decided to take all the words from Peter's N2 list and put them into the Anki program. It will take me a long time to do this, however, if I keep doing it everyday for a few months, I'm sure I'll be done in no time. Also note that, once you've put all those vocabulary words in, make sure to continue to add other vocabulary words that you come across. For example, don't just assume that those vocabulary words are all you need. Challenge yourself and go onto Japanese websites for children (or even general websites) and read articles there and add words that you don't know. The point to the test is not the memorize all the words, but to be able to recognize words in sentences. Therefore, if you are memorizing words like 大勢 and you just memorize that word, it won't be of much use to you in the real world, unless you know how they use this word in context. |

I also took level 4 and I already finished "An integrated approach to intermediate japanese", it took me one month (didn't sutudy all the vocab though). Now I'm gonna re study chuukyuu but with "tobira", and I'm also studying for 2 kyuu grammar though the somatome 2kyuu bunpou book.
After finishing tobira I'll start one the joukyuu book from japan times and after that I'll start focusing one vocab. Of course while studying tobira and this last one I'll focus on their vocab too.
I actually made my goal of this year to reach 1kyuu (though I'll probably just take 2kyuu, unless I'm really confident of my skills).
Btw, I've been listening to japanese podcasts everyday and my listening comprehension gets better every day.

| I have given using electronic flashcards a lot of thoughts and I'm going to go with paper again. I'm just really lazy and I like to be able to toss flashcards in my pocket or lay in bed and watch them between commercials. Further, I can divide them up where I leave off and ensure that I see ALL the cards - a guarantee that I don't think I can have with the electronic system, due to its "Rate your memory" setup. |
well, that is good, as long as you feel comfortable. I did the cards for the N4 of last year and I did what you did, bring some of them along, however, I found that the amount of time it took me to make them, with the amount of actual time I used them, I thought, it's probably better that I do it electronically. For N4, I found that the more I saw the word in the list, the less I needed to actually use the cards, so it helped just reading sentences over and over again and eventually I remembered the word. However, the cards are nice to have, whenever you want and you don't have to turn on the computer. I'm close to half-way done typing in the initial grouping of cards into my electronic group. I can also access it online and it is sync'ed, so if I do some online and come back home, it will update it in my computer. However, I do agree though that having the hard copy is useful.
Good luck! |
