Ayame, often the practice tests are the real thing from previous years.

My ALC book with four tests is the same as yours, I believe. Judging from the foreword, it appears the questions were taking from the Nihongo Journal and patterned after the contents and difficulty of the 2003 JLPT test in particular.

To make sure my practice is well-rounded, I will (time allowing) buy last year's and the previous year's tests as well. 2005 was supposed to be especially difficult.

Regarding the listening test

I try to be thinking ahead as much as possible, looking at the upcoming pictures, thinking about words/phrases I might expect to hear. At the same time though, it's important to stay open-minded.

Again, something fairly simple, but I look at the pictures and make sure I am clear on the differences before the start of each question.

For the non-picture questions, I take notes in English (faster than writing in Japanese). I take a note of the question and then anything I think relates directly to the answer. Sometimes write a word in Japanese if I don't get the meaning straight away.

I've also noticed that if i encounter some difficult questions in a row and my confidence slips, I'm more likely to lose focus on the next questions, so I try to forget about the previous questions and just be focused on the moment.

Same. I find if I get stuck on a question I think the best thing to do is take a guess (hopefully an educated one!) and be fresh for the next question. Just taking it one question at a time with a clear head seems to be the best way for me too.

Captain Haddock - Thanks, guess I could've looked at the foreward too, eh? I just skipped straight to the tests.

I actually did better on the 2005 test than I have been so far on those practice tests, even though I found the reading part (2005) to be difficult.

that's a good idea - sometimes I hear a familar-sounding Japanese word but I can't think of its meaning right away, so if i jotted it down, it might help. generally I take a minimum of notes - if i write too much I end up not listening to the next little bit and miss something. And, yeah, write however it's fastest - in my case usually romaji, sometimes english, occasionally japanese, and generally abbreviated.

On another subject, I took Applecart's advice and did the grammar first on my latest practice test - it really worked! I had allotted myself 20 minutes for the grammar, but I really didn't need that much time, so it freed up between 5-10 min. for the reading. Although, even with the extra time i had a hard time with some of the reading passages. Final overall score was 60.7% - too close to failing for comfort!

#11) 88% This was the dreaded 2005 test and the reading was a lot harder than the 2004 version. There were more questions where I had to go with what "seemed right" rather really knowing what was right.
The other sections where about the same or maybe a bit easier than the 2004 test.

Kanji/vocab: 93%
Listening 96%
Reading grammar 81%

Now I'm all out of practice tests- whatever will I do with myself? Wink

I wish I could take the credit, but I've read that suggestion a few times and finally decided to try it myself. Actually it was Tim's comment on these forums that convinced me. So we should both be thanking Tim Very Happy

My results are in for the 2005 past paper...I just want to pass tomorrow...my New Year's resolution will be to study harder next year...honest!

Anyway,

Kanji / vocab 73/100
Listening 85/100
Reading / grammar 83/200

Total 241/400

THAT WILL DO!

My strong point is listening, never had below 80%. But obviously my weak point is the final paper. Here's hoping I can dodge through tomorrow.

Good luck to all...well, except Applecart (none required!)

Ha! Just shows you don't know me. It would be so like me to get on the wrong train and miss the exam alltogether.

Anyway, yes good luck to all. And as a high school teacher of mine once advised us before our exams "Remember to breathe" .

It's sound advice and I've been following it ever since.

Well, finally I have done a practice test!

I bought the 1999 practice test for levels 1 and 2 about 5 years ago and finally I opened it up. I mean literally, it had been in its shrinkwrap the whole time. It comes with a cassette tape for the listening. I almost forgot how to use a cassette tape player.

And the results of my practice test 1999 are.... pretty poor. Sad
First, the figures:

66点 out of 100 文字・語彙
43点 out of 100 聴解
122点 out of 200 読解・文法
-------------------
231点 out of 200 = 57.75%

I expected to do better in the vocabulary section given last years performance, but you guys did say 2005 was an easier year for that section.

And I'm just shocked at how poorly I did on the listening given that last year I got 67 points. I mean, 2 years ago I got 41 points. You'd think I could do better every year.

The last section was a marked improvement for me, even though it's barely enough to hold its own. I think I must have just had some good guesses.

Can't do much about listening. I guess I'd better review vocabulary tonight to strengthen my chances of passing this test.

For the reading section, I spent 19 minutes on the first article and its 7 questions. After the second article and its 6 questions, I had 36 minutes left. So that means I spent half my time on those two for a total of 45pts out of 73. Hmm... I always have to spend more than half my time on less than half the total worth.

For the grammar section (IV~VI), I had 19 minutes left. I think I lucked out on the last two (V and VI). They each had 6 questions and I got only the first one wrong in each section.

In the vocabulary section, I really don't like that last part. 10 questions, they give you an explanation and you have to choose the word. I only got the first and the last one right.

Whew... time to take a short break.

Regarding strategy here's what's important for me.

Listening: for the questions without the pictures, I find that it's essential to focus on the question the first time they ask, then you know what you're to listen for...kind of obvious but sometimes I found myself still thinking of the previous question...gotta stay focussed.

Reading/Grammar: gonna go with the consensus here and spend the first 10 minutes on the grammar and then the rest on the reading.
