I have changed the Site forums to be readable only by registered users.

So, the forums: (1) Announcements, (2) Suggestions and (3) Errors and Corrections are visible but messages cannot be read unless you are logged in (ie you have registered/signed up).

I don't want to go overboard with security, but it occurred to me that there's no point in letting 'Guests' or 'Passers by' see these forums anyway, because you need to be registered to add a new message and there's not much point in reading without having the potential to create a new message, in this case.

I could be wrong, I've just done it on a whim, let me know your opinion if you like.

Sorry, there was a problem with replying (and editing quoting etc) just tonight, as I was upgrading the forum software. This wasn't related to my other idea about permissions, but I decided to change them back again too... In other words, I just rolled everything back... Lucky I just put everything under version control.

I think the permission change to the site forums is fine.

I would like to see another forum that is only readable by the registered users. Maybe it could be called Members Only. In there we could post information which we would not care to be available through search engines.

Um, just for curiosity's sake, what could you possibly want to say regarding the study of Japanese that you don't want search engines to find?

I disagree with making the forum unreadable to non registered people.. how would anyone judge how good the forum is if they can't see it. Also, it will only reduce the number of people that use the forum.

Also if someone starts a thread and asks a question directed at the public, it will only be seen by those who are members. So posts inviting others such as for finding study partners or something similar will not be as effective.

Yeah, I can understand that. Although note, I always intended to keep the top 5 'forums' - so I mean all the levels 4,3,2,1 and General - they would always be public, so they can be publicly useful.

I was just wondering whether people who are not registered need to read 'Announcements', 'Suggestions', and 'Errors and Corrections'.
In the meantime, I changed everything back and will leave it to further thought/discussion.

I run the risk of going overboard on security and access, but on the other hand, I don't mind tightening strings a little if appropriate.

Well, we could post our test scores. I only post mine to share with you guys, not that you would care about my scores though.

If people aren't going to even register, then I don't see what the point of them coming to the website is. There are a lot of people who register and never even post. I wish everybody would participate (in a courteous and pleasant way.)
