N1's purpose is to test our abilities in the language so pretty much every book should do, from my point of view.
For grammar, I'm using:
→ 完全マスター1級 日本語能力試験文法問題対策
→ 日本語能力試験 The Preparatory Course for The Japanese Language Proficiency Test 文法編 実力アップ 1級!
They are both in Japanese only, but I doubt you'll have any problems. The reason there are two textbooks is that the grammar in the first one isn't complete.
For the listening part:
→ 日本語能力試験 日本語総まとめ問題集 「聴解編」
The new test doesn't have pictures (or so I've heard), but there's some general vocabulary in there you might want to look at.
For your reading:
Just grab something and off you go ^^
And about your vocabulary... I'm afraid I cannot help you. I made myself some dictionaries (currently 5, but 2 of them are from the recommended word list for the lvl2 and lvl1), but it takes some years. Lvl1's alone are around 9000, so... |

I have the first one and really like it but I`m not a big fan of the Unicom books. How much more grammar is covered in the Unicom one compared to Kanzen Master?
Also, does anyone know if any of the recent N1 grammar books cover any new grammar points? |

The grammar is basically the same, but I find the explanations and examples better than the Kanzen series. For example, in the Kanzen it is written that after X, you must use Y, while after reading the second book, I realized that this isn't true. I consider it as a mistake. |

I got the book dimitrican linked to over the weekend and I like it so far. I had seen it before and was put off by the horrendously busy design of the front cover (it look likes a stock ticker collided with the front page of a newspaper then exploded) but inside its well-organized.
Theres a fair number of new grammar points compared to the kanzen master book and 4 or 5 example sentences for each point (some books, like the Pattern de Manabu one, only have one example per grammar point) and there are lots of practice problems. The final test at the end also has a large number (50 or so) of the new type of grammar question they added where you need to put a sentence in the correct order. |
