I would like to know if there is a clear cut way to know how to make a verb inflect in a transiative or intraniative way?
Am I to remember all vt. ways for vi. verbs and vise versa?
Am I asking a question with no basis?
Am I over thinking this?
From what I know a vi. verb can be changed to vt. by removing the U and replacing with E + RU; vt. to vi. - remove RU and replace E with U.
Ofcourse there are exceptions.
Is there a list of exceptions to remember?
Is the formentioned thumb-rule correct?
I would apreciate it if anyone could help me in the right direction.
Thanks kindly
Dict. form vi. asobu あそぶ play 遊ぶ
????? vt. asobasu あそばす let play 遊ばす
????? vi. hajimaru はじまる begin 始まる
Dict. form vt. hajimeru はじめる begin 始める

There are no real rules for this, though there are some patterns. Check out this page for a list of common pairs: Intransitive/Transitive verbs. |
